Time-wasting causes stress for millions 18 August 2008
Britons are stressing out about not having enough time to spend with their families or friends, according to a new study.
Four out of five respondents to a survey by American Express said they get stressed out each day, with time-wasting their biggest gripe. Stress has been found to be the biggest cause of absence for non-manual workers in the UK.
Top stress-inducing situations include traffic delays on the daily commute, while one in three said they do not have enough time at the weekend to spend with their family and friends because of work commitments
.
Among the most stressed are those aged between 25 and 34 who lament the loss of their weekends because of time-consuming tasks.
Office politics were cited as the most stressful situations for one in five respondents, while many moan about staying late at the office.
Around 12 per cent of people said they have no time to arrange a social life due to work commitments, leaving less time for people to find love.
Chris Rolland, head of American Express Insurance Services, said: "For many hard working Britons there are simply not enough hours in the day and things that waste our time have a big impact on stress levels. While we can't clear traffic jams, we can provide insurance services tailored to people's busy lives. We even offer personal assistance services as part of our travel insurance product for busy people who need help on the go."
