It seems that social networking is not all about making useful work contacts and many members of MySpace and Facebook are using the sites to flirt.

That is according to a new research on US social networking trends from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

The research revealed that Facebook and MySpace were principally used for personal purposes while LinkedIn was used more for professional reasons than the other sites.

When asked if people would use their online profile to flirt, some 22 per cent of Facebook users said they would, while 20 per cent of MySpace users admitted to using the site to flirt.

Meanwhile, the largest proportion of people used LinkedIn to do business as 67 per cent said they used the site to make new business or professional contacts.

It would appear that business and pleasure don't mix, as no-one admitted to using LinkedIn for flirting.

Some people definitely seem to be using social networking sites with a view to finding a partner as two per cent of respondents said they had deleted their profile because they had got married or were dating someone.ADNFCR-1043-ID-18984894-ADNFCR
