People advised to forget their first love 20 January 2009
Romantics hoping for a successful relationship are being urged to forget their first love.
This is because people may be left with unrealistic expectations about future relationships if they measure it against an intense early encounter.
That is according to Changing Relationships, research edited by Dr Malcolm Brynin, of the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex
.
Commenting on his findings, Dr Brynin, said: "Remarkably, it seems that the secret to long-term happiness in a relationship is to skip a first relationship.
"In an ideal world you would wake up already in your second relationship."
He explained that those who experience a successful, passionate first relationship will be left bored and disappointed if they try to emulate that experience in future partnerships.
Dr Brynin prescribes abstinence from intensely passionate first relationships as the ideal way to secure successful relationships in the future.
