... Oz mayor calls for 'more ugly women'
19 August 2008

A mayor in Australia is trying to play matchmaker by urging ugly women to come to his town to get men back in the dating game.

John Molony, the mayor of Mount Isa in Queensland, said he wants to redress the balance of males to females in the area.

With men far outnumbering women, he said he wanted more "beauty-disadvantaged" women to come to Mount Isa to find love and make themselves – as well as the unlucky-in-love men – happy
.

He told a local newspaper that many of the women in the town had already found love and were happier for it.

Mr Molony said: "Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face.

"Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness."

But Mr Molony's comments have caused a backlash among many angry women who feel his comments were derogatory and rude.

However, defending his comments, he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "I said beauty-disadvantaged. Now beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"Beauty can be a good set of teeth, beauty is nice wavy hair. Beauty can be blue eyes or green eyes.

"There is such a thing as disposition, temperament, manners, general attractiveness, attitude and demeanour, all those things tend to make a person attractive."
