If he's a good date, he will wait, research reveal 20 January 2009
Women who want to find a "good" man should delay sleeping with him at the first opportunity.
That is according to research carried out by researchers at University College London, University of Warwick and London School of Economics and Political Science.
Professor Robert Seymour of University College London, suggested that by "delaying mating" a female is likely to reduce her chances of unearthing a "bad male".
He went on to suggest that in human relationships, couples enjoy an extended period of courtship so that a woman can obtain information about her male partner.
Professor Seymour said: "By delaying mating, the female is able to reduce the chance that she will mate with a bad male. A male's willingness to court for a long time is a signal that he is likely to be a good male."
Therefore, Professor Seymour suggested that couples who have long courtships will benefit from a "harmonious match".
He said that this goes some way to explaining why woman are often advised not to sleep with a man on the first date.
Mills and Boon romantic fiction must still adhere to strict guidelines and there are no one night stands allowed in the novels unless they lead to marriage.
