Babies change couples' relationships 15 August 2008
Loved-up couples delighted with the birth of their newborn baby will share a unifying bond, but having a child can also drive a wedge between a man and a woman, new research reveals.
A survey of new dads by Colief Infant Drops found that 42 per cent of new fathers experience more arguments with their wives and girlfriends after their child is born.
According to the study, the top reason for squabbles is money as the cost of a new child takes its toll on the relationship and men in their 30s are most likely to fight over finances
.
The poll of around 3,000 fathers around the country also found that couples find it hard to cope with fewer hours sleep, screaming babies and baby health problems.
A lack of sleep is less of a problem for older dads, making them less likely to fight over a lack of sleep.
The study found that 28 per cent of fathers said their relationship with their wife or girlfriend was the biggest difference that came about after the birth of their first child.
Despite the fact that many reported more squabbling and less sleep, one in ten said becoming a father and seeing their other half take to motherhood meant they were more in love with their partner now.
Commenting on the study, Paula Hall, sex and relationship expert, said: "Having a baby has a massive impact on pretty much every aspect of a couple's relationship, from the practical things like money, running a home and maintaining a social life through to emotional issues like maintaining intimacy and adapting to the responsibilities and roles of parenting.
"Having a baby can be the most bonding experience a couple can ever experience, but be prepared for the trials as well as the euphoria."
When a baby is born, a whole host of new features come into a relationship, including fighting over who does the baby chores.
Some 47 per cent of male respondents said they regularly change their baby's napp
