Spain has taken the not-co-coveted title of Europe's divorce capital.
A divorce takes place every 3.7 minutes in the Catholic country, famed for its firey passion.
More than 140,000 couples split up last year, representing a 50 per cent divorce increase since 2005 and a quadrupling since 2001, according to the Institute of Family Policy (IPF).
Regionally, the highest number of divorces took place in the Canary Islands, followed by the Balearic Islands, with Cataluna in third place.
Part of the reason for the divorce boom is the implementation of laws which speed and ease the divorce process.
Eduardo Hertfelder, president of the IPF, said: "A true change of course is needed as far as legal measures [and] social and cultural protection of marriage and the family to rectify this tremendous crisis we're experiencing in Spain."
The divorce rate, as well as the rise of gay marriage in the country has also promoted criticism from the Pope.
