... Sea slug mating: a twist to standard romance Sea slug mating: a twist to standard romance

17 August 2007

The mating tactics of the sea slug have been uncovered by Australian researchers who have described the courtship as "like a cross between Chanel No 5 and Viagra".

And it seems that these underwater lovers know how to enjoy themselves
.

Since the slugs are virtually blind, they release strong pheromones into the water, allowing them to locate one another. These are so strong that, according to the researchers, a teaspoon in a swimming pool would be enough to send the slugs wild.

The slugs are hermaphrodites, which deliver and receive sperm simultaneously.

And they don't just stay in pairs, reports the Independent.

Scott Cummins, a biologist who conducted the research, said: "They only live for a year and they come together for these breeding parties which can last for days.

"After that they die, but they have a big breeding party beforehand, so they go off with a bang."ADNFCR-1016-ID-18250309-ADNFCR
