A judge has ruled that a 24-year-old Canadian is not allowed to have a girlfriend for three years, in a ruling thought to be the first of its kind.
The order follows Steven Cranley's treatment of a former girlfriend after they broke up.
The sufferer of a dependent personality disorder, Cranley assaulted his ex-partner and then prevented her from calling the police by cutting her phone wires, before stabbing himself in the aorta.
According to doctors, he has "difficultly coping with rejection".
The judge said Mr Cranley "cannot form a romantic relationship of an intimate nature with a female person.
"That is the only way I can see the protection of the public is in place until you get the counselling you need," he continued.
The defendant's lawyer said that the no-girlfriend order was the first such ruling he had seen.
