... Male plastic surgery on the rise Male plastic surgery on the rise

17 July 2007

Increasing numbers of men are opting to have cosmetic surgery, experts said yesterday.

The Men's Health Forum attributes the rise to advertisers and the media, who promote a masculine ideal of toned athleticism
.

Many men aspire to this stereotype as they believe physical perfection will bring wealth, happiness and love.

The most popular procedure is liposuction which costs around £3,700 and involves the removal of fat from areas such as the abdomen, chest and chin.

Other men are opting for eye bag removal, botox and breast reduction.

The number of men over 50 having cosmetic surgery has jumped by more than 140 per cent in the past five years.

Peter Baker, chief executive of the Men's Health Forum, said: "Since the late 80s and early 90s, the message to men is that they have to look good.

"We constantly see images of men with six-packs and toned bodies on the front of magazines and on TV.

"It is similar to what women have had to put up with for much longer, although it is not yet as bad. It is unhelpful."
