... Macho Macho men: not doing it for women Macho Macho men: not doing it for women

9 August 2007

Women view macho men as inappropriate long-term partners, a new study has revealed.

The research, conducted by Durham and St Andrews universities, showed women pictures of men and asked them to make judgements about them as partners
.

Men with masculine features such as a square jaw were thought by women to be more dominant and less faithful. Women also expected these men to make worse parents and to be less 'warm' than men with fewer typically masculine physical features.

Men, conversely, thought that women with feminine features were more likely to commit and be trustworthy within a relationship.

Dr Lynda Boothroyd, lead author of the study, said: "This research shows a high amount of agreement between women about what they see, personality wise, when asked to 'judge a book by its cover'.

"They may well use that impression of someone to decide whether or not to engage with that person. That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time in her life."
