Young women in Italy are calling on Beatrice, the muse of medieval poet Dante Alighieri, to help them in their quest to find true love.

Since February many young women have been leaving notes on the tomb of Beatrice, in the hope that they can have the success in love that she had.

One of the notes reads: "You who inspired the great Dante, inspire love in my boyfriend as well," reports the Times.

Another young woman wrote: "Help me, Beatrice, to find the man of my life ? I who am worthy of love!"

And it goes on: "If it was you, Beatrice, who sent me this love, a gift from heaven, then thank you. Please now make it last forever."

The phenomenon has reached international proportions, with notes written in English, Spanish and Japanese among others.

Father Roberto Tassi, the priest at the Santa Margherita de' Cerchi in Florence, told La Stampa, "I find the whole thing rather beautiful.

"In my view these are both hymns to earthly love and expressions of love for God at the same time.

"The other day I decided to keep the church open until ten in the evening because there was always someone standing or kneeling in front of the tomb."copyright
