Photo for story - Hurley's wedding could land her in jail ... Hurley's wedding could land her in jail
13 April 2007

The recent wedding of actress Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar has prompted criticism that it may have violated Hindu codes of conduct, an act which constitutes a breach in the law.

The charges, which could see the couple sent to jail, were launched by devout Hindu Vishnu Khandelwal, who claims the no-expenses-spared five-day extravaganza was offensive to the Hindu faith.

Issues which raised concern included Liz's refusal to remove her footwear when entering the marriage temple and then drinking alcohol which goes against the requirements that a couple behave soberly on the day of their wedding.

Hm Saraswat, prosecuting lawyer, said: "An arrest warrant could be issued for Arun and Liz as soon as the prosecution has made its case ? either because they are summoned to give evidence or they have been found guilty."

If found guilty the pair could face a stretch of three years in prison.

The £2 million deal the couple signed with Hello! Magazine to cover the wedding could be used as evidence against the newly-weds, particularly pictures of the couple kissing.

To make matters worse for the couple Hurley's father-in-law has said that he will testify against them, after they fell out following the ceremony.copyright
