That is according to a new study which suggests that falling head over heals can be detrimental to the health
.
Researchers at Imperial College London discovered that the state of being utterly smitten triggers physical reactions such as the dilation of eyes, sweaty palms and an increase in heart rate, as well as an excess of adrenaline.
Such conditions are thought to take their toll on the body and its well-being - meaning that the phrase 'lovesick' may have a lot of sense to it.
"Love has some obvious physical effects," Professor Martin Cowie was quoted in the Telegraph as saying.
"Pupils dilate, palms become sweaty and the heart rate increases. Large amounts of adrenaline are running through our system which does cause problems," he added.
Mr Cowie went on to say that stress-related illnesses at work arise from similar physical conditions.
"We have seen a big rise in people complaining of flu-like symptoms over a long period of time," he said.
