... Australians: Marrying less, divorcing more Australians: Marrying less, divorcing more

10 August 2007

Australians are not tying the knot as often as they once were and nor are their marital relationships lasting as long.

The findings come as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) releases figures about marriages in the country, revealing some surprising changes in how well lovers down under are fairing
.

Marriages have declined by a staggering 25 per cent since 1986, from 7.2 per 1,000 people to just 5.4 per 1,000.

And the number of people marrying has escalated over the same period. In 1986, 29 per cent of the adult population had never been married. That has now risen to 32 per cent, reports the Herald.

The survey also revealed that people are marrying later, with the average age of the bride rising from 23.5 years to 28 at the time of their first marriage.

The divorce rate has also risen from 28 per cent to 33 per cent.ADNFCR-1016-ID-18242180-ADNFCR
