... All that Brits still need is hippy love All that Brits still need is hippy love

25 May 2007

Free love and other hippy values are still flourishing in Britain, according to a survey published today.

The YouGov poll for Readers' Digest marks the 40th anniversary of the 1967 summer of love and comes just in time to inspire this year's summer of new love and dating.

According to the survey, 75 per cent of people now believe in sex before marriage and one in ten of us say we would have multiple partners.

Almost half of Britons agree with the statement, "Make Love Not War!" and 82 per cent of us want to save the planet.

Our preference for ethically grown food, keeping vegetable patches and the natural remedies that more of half of us like to use shows the greener values of the sixties have been retained.

Right down to what we wear, the current fashion for floral tunics and maxi dresses reflects the result that over a third of people said the 60s would have been their ideal era to grow up in ? a desire that prompts half of us to walk around barefoot.

"There was much more to the Summer of Love than taking drugs, sleeping around and shirking responsibility,'' Readers Digest editor-in-chief Katherine Walker commented on the results.

"Our poll shows that the hippie era produced many innovative, enduring ideals that British people of all ages have come to live by. In some ways they really did change the world.'' ADNFCR-1016-ID-18160960-ADNFCR
