The technical term for the phenomenon is May-December romance, and it applies to older men coupling with younger women as much as to so-called "toy boys" and their more mature ladies.
Sociologist Susan Shapiro Barash told CBS News: "A May-December romance is between a woman and a man who are about ten years apart in age, maybe eight years and anything over ten years. And they're really defined as a couple."
"I think that for the woman it's really liberating. She's breaking the rule. She's doing something that she was taught not to in our culture."
Courtney Cox Arquette is nine years older than her husband David, whom she met while filming Scream.
Gwyneth has been around for eight more years than her husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin.
Elton John, meanwhile, proves boys are in on the act too, having been born twelve years before his partner David Furnish.
However, Joan Collins is the big mama of May-December pairings. Her husband Percy Gibson is 32 years her junior.
